just two tips in order to speed up your Notes system:

Windows XP (and Vista too) has a lot of hidden temporary directories where over time a lot of non-required files add up. Sometimes even Notes 8.x installations fail. So it's usually a good idea to clean all temporary directories before the installation and right after booting. My preferred tool for that is the ATF Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25

Eclipse based tools like Notes, Sametime, Expeditor use quite many files. In order to read them quickly, defragmenting can speed up your system. Once in a while use a working defragmenter. In order only to defragment the portion of the file system that contains Lotus applications and data you can use a small tool called Contig - can be downloaded here: http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinternals/bb897428.aspx

Examples:
contig -v -s c:\notes\*.*
contig -v -s C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\*.*
This can be used for Expeditor, Sametime, Notes - any versions... - thanks for this info around contig from a blog of a German Lotus colleague.
